Melissa Hummel

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Class of 2023, Biological Engineering

Melissa Hummel is a student in the class of 2023 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) studying Biological Engineering. She grew up in the Central Texas area where she started competing in robotics in 5th grade. Through her robotics career, she developed several curricula to teach the engineering design process and various aspects of robotics to elementary school students at their yearly science days. She also taught summer robotics camps at various companies and organized her own camp for a disadvantaged elementary school near her. At MIT she is working in the Research Laboratory of Electronics in a lab combining brain and cognitive sciences with material science engineering. She can become interested in nearly any topic and always wants to learn more about everything. In her free time, she likes to get lost in the world of fiction books, spend time outdoors, and knit/crochet.

Accomplishments on the ASPT:

  • Compiled case studies on successful bio- and neuro-tech companies for the BrainMind start-up engine

  • Expanded BrainMind's list of entrepreneurs to reach out to about joining the network

  • Performed background research on pledge foundations for BrainMind's Builder's Pledge
